Compare recourse, not labels
A professional seller can offer written returns, warranty, insured shipping and an accountable business identity. A dealer name without useful terms may provide little more protection than a private listing.
Price the information advantage
Experienced dealers may identify variants, disclose service parts and present condition consistently. That expertise has value when the reference is difficult and the individual example is expensive to assess.
Understand the private-sale trade
Private sellers can offer lower prices and direct ownership history, but the buyer usually accepts more identity, payment and return risk. Documentation and a safe meeting process matter more.
Include tax, shipping and payment
Compare landed totals and protections. A lower private ask can lose its advantage after travel, escrow, inspection or currency costs, while a dealer price can change materially after tax.
Choose the channel by the watch
A common modern reference with many comparables may be manageable privately. A rare, altered or high-value watch often earns the premium for strong recourse and specialist judgment.
